BRUSSELS - In a statement, the Council of the European Union said it had imposed sanctions on three Russian state or semi-state institutions and one station in the Czech Republic. These media companies are allegedly spreading Russian propaganda. They are Ukraine's pro-Russian Voice of Europe, which reportedly had about 155 visitors per day, and other media outlets such as Izvestia, RIA Novosti and Rossiyskaya Gazeta.
According to the EU Council, the freezing of the assets and accounts of these companies across the EU is likely to follow. EU Member States approved the sanctions in a so-called written procedure in recent days. The RIA Novosti platform is part of the portfolio of the Russia Today media group, which is owned and operated by the Russian government. Izvestia is owned by the Russian media group Narodnaya Media Gruppa. The Russian government is also behind the publication of Rossiyskaya Gazeta.
