PRAGUE - President Petr Pavel stressed that Europe must play a key role in the peace talks on Ukraine. He said it is essential that European countries be active participants in these talks because the results will have a direct impact on the entire continent. Pavel also expressed his belief that achieving peace requires unity between the European Union and the United States. He stressed that Ukraine needs clear security guarantees and a stable peace plan for long-term stability in the region. The President also warned of the danger posed by Russian President Vladimir Putin and called on European partners to give Ukraine all the support it needs.
In the context of these efforts, Pavel met with the US Commissioner for Ukraine and Russia, Keith Kellogg, at the Munich Security Conference in February 2024. They discussed ways in which Europe can contribute to the peace process, and Pavel stressed that Europe cannot remain a party to these negotiations.
In June 2024, President Paul attended a peace summit in Switzerland, where representatives of 80 countries gathered. The summit called for respect for Ukraine's territorial integrity as the basis for ending Russian aggression. Upon his return, Pavel said that the summit had exceeded expectations and that it was necessary for other major world players, especially China, to participate in future negotiations.
President Pavel also warned that without the participation of Russia and China at the negotiating table, it would be impossible to achieve a lasting peaceful solution to the conflict in Ukraine. He stressed that China should take greater responsibility for a peaceful world order based on international rules, not on military or economic power.
Despite these diplomatic efforts, Pavel warned that achieving a just peace in Ukraine is rather illusory, as Russia's defeat, the return of occupied territories to Ukraine and compensation for damages are unlikely. However, he stressed that only Ukraine can set the conditions for negotiations or an end to the fighting and that the international community should support Kiev in this effort.
Pavel also said that the supply of military ammunition and equipment to Ukraine is part of legitimate support and does not exclude the search for diplomatic solutions to the conflict. He stressed the need to support Ukraine by all means in accordance with international law so that Russia understands that there is no military solution.
President Pavel thus continues to advocate an active European role in the peace negotiations on Ukraine and stresses the need for unity among European states and their partners in the search for a lasting and just solution to the conflict.
