In a world undergoing profound transformation and facing increasing global challenges, humanity faces deepening deficits in peace, development, security and governance.
Based on its deep understanding of human history and developmental patterns, China has put forward a series of concepts and global initiatives to respond to the common aspirations of people around the world for peace, development and cooperation.
The Chinese President's concept of building a community with a shared future for humanity Xi Jinping put forward more than a decade ago, has gradually developed from an idea into a coherent scientific system that is being put into practice through extensive international collaboration.
A shared vision of a shared world
On 18 January 2017, Xi delivered a major keynote speech at the UN headquarters in Geneva entitled „Working together, let us build a community with a shared future for humanity“. In it, he elaborated on China's solutions to current global challenges from a global and historical perspective.
„To pass on the torch of peace from generation to generation, to sustain development and let civilization flourish - this is what the people of all countries desire; and it is also the responsibility that the statesmen of our generation should bear. The Chinese proposal is: to build a community with a shared future for humanity and to achieve common and win-win development,“ Xi said.
At its core, this vision addresses humanity's most fundamental existential dilemma in an era of deepening interdependence: whether states choose confrontation or cooperation, zero-sum rivalry or win-win partnerships. The answer presented was clear - peaceful development, mutual respect and shared prosperity are not only possible, but represent an inevitable historical trend and a genuine aspiration of people around the world.
The speech resonated far beyond the walls of the Geneva hall. Over the years, the concept has continued to provoke a broad and sustained international response and has gradually evolved from an idea into a framework that guides global action.
This vision was subsequently concretized on several levels. International cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative has steadily expanded and the idea of a shared future has been extended to specific areas such as a global community of health for all, a community of shared futures in cyberspace, a maritime community of shared futures, and a community of life for humanity and nature, which has significantly strengthened global governance in each sector.
At the same time, China has built a community with a shared future with dozens of countries and regions, and the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative and the Global Civilisation Initiative - all proposed by China - have further consolidated this vision.
Through concrete cooperation projects and policy coordination, China seeks to safeguard world peace, promote inclusive development and strengthen dialogue among civilizations, demonstrating that the concept of building a community with a shared future for humanity is not abstract rhetoric but a living and evolving practice.

Towards a fairer and more efficient system of global governance
As global challenges have become more complex - from climate change to geopolitical tensions to development disparities - the shortcomings of existing global governance mechanisms have become increasingly apparent. In this context, China has long stressed that global governance must better reflect the realities of today's world and the voice of the global South.
In 2025, China put forward the Global Governance Initiative, which emphasizes the country's efforts to strengthen the concept of a community with a shared future for humanity and strive to build healthy international relations based on equality, win-win cooperation and common development while respecting the interests, sovereignty and fundamental choices of all nations.
The initiative quickly attracted widespread attention and positive feedback, with more than 140 countries and international organisations expressing their support.
In addition to proposals, China is pushing for global governance reform through concrete actions. It has fully and effectively implemented the Paris Agreement and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, announced its 2035 Nationally Determined Contributions target, and proposed the establishment of a Global Partnership for Clean Energy Cooperation.
The country is also promoting the expansion of cooperation mechanisms such as BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, and developing South-South cooperation platforms, including the China-Africa Cooperation Forum and the China-CELAC Forum, bringing new dynamism to the reshaping of the global governance system.
As key components of China's vision for the future in a time of accelerated global change, these four initiatives have provided solutions to disputes, eased tensions and promoted joint participation in resistance to hegemony and power politics. In doing so, they respond more effectively to the common challenges of humanity, narrow the development gap between North and South, protect the common interests of all countries and contribute to building global stability and peace.
