TEHRAN, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani said Monday that the presence of the United States and its military intervention in the region is largely to blame for the uncertainty, instability and tensions in West Asia.
He made the remarks at his weekly news conference in the Iranian capital, Tehran, while commenting on recent tensions between U.S. forces and resistance groups in Iraq and other countries in the region.
"Much of the uncertainty, instability and tension in the region has its origins in the US government's political, military and security interventions in the region and its unrestricted and unconditional support for Israel," he said.
The statements followed Thursday's attack by the US military on the headquarters of the Hachd al-Shaabi resistance group in eastern Baghdad, in which three people were killed, including the commander of the Hachd al-Shaabi-affiliated Harakat al-Nujaba.
Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani said Friday that his government would soon begin negotiations with the U.S.-led coalition in Iraq through a committee charged with organizing the withdrawal of foreign troops, stressing that the government "will not back down from this decision."
"The time has come for U.S. military forces to withdraw from Iraqi territory," Kanaani said, adding that countries in the region can ensure regional peace, stability and security by working together without the help of extra-regional military forces.
