TEHRAN - Washington should pay Tehran $1 trillion in compensation for sanctions. This statement was made by General Sahrab-Ali Shamkhani, deputy commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) for legal affairs. His words were carried by the Al-Alam television channel.
According to Shamkhani, the restrictions imposed by the US authorities have harmed Iran for 25 years. He pointed out that the US resorted to sanctions against Iran after the Islamic Revolution and the seizure of the "spy nest" (the US embassy in Tehran), not after the withdrawal from the nuclear deal.
The general also pointed out that the US had supported terrorist groups in the Middle East, which Tehran had also suffered from, he added.
The US first imposed anti-Iran sanctions after the 1979 Islamic Revolution, when students occupied the US embassy building and staff in Tehran. In 2015, the UK, China, France, Germany, Russia, the US and Iran concluded a nuclear deal, the so-called Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which included the lifting of sanctions in exchange for curbs on Iran's nuclear programme. However, in 2018, US President Donald Trump withdrew from the deal and rolled back all sanctions. Their list is still expanding today.
During his 2024 election campaign, Trump commented on the escalation in the Middle East and called on Israel not to be prohibited from striking Iran's nuclear facilities. In addition, the Republican, after surviving assassination attempts, declared that the Islamic Republic posed a direct threat to his life. The Iranian Foreign Ministry has denied any involvement in the attacks on the politician.
