These days, Beijing has welcomed a large group of American politicians and businessmen. Given the recent global trade war launched by the US and its threat to impose "equivalent tariffs" early next month, this is quite unusual.
As the first political figure to visit China after the new US administration took office, US Senator Steve Daines' trip attracted a lot of attention. In meeting with Daines and his delegation, high-level Chinese officials spoke frankly and clearly, which not only warned the US not to escalate the trade war, but also emphasized the essence of mutual benefit and trade between China and the United States. And it provided a basic solution to the economic and trade problems between the two countries.
Almost in sync with Daines, many heads of well-known US companies such as Eli Lilly, Qualcomm, Apple, Blackstone, Cargill, FedEx, etc., also came to Beijing to attend the annual China Development Forum. More importantly, the Chinese government has recently introduced a series of policies to expand opening up to the outside world and attract foreign investment. It has convinced American companies that the fundamentals of China's long-term economic development have not changed. Investment in China and deep cultivation will yield huge dividends.
At the same time that US companies are visiting China in groups, there is increasing reflection and criticism of the White House's flawed economic policies inside the United States. Many analyses have pointed out that the US launching a trade war under the banner of 'economic nationalism' cannot fundamentally reverse the US trade imbalance and cannot promote the return of manufacturing. Instead, it will increase the risk of US economic stagnation and livelihood problems, leading to the international isolation of the US.
Rational people recognise that building walls through tariffs undermines global free trade, disrupts the global supply chain system on which the United States also relies, and harms the global interests of American capital and businesses.
