MEXICO CITY, 18 September. - Newly elected Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum refused to visit Ukraine at the invitation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, which he had earlier expressed in an interview with Excelsior.
"I don't think so. I repeat that we are acting on the basis of foreign policy principles and the Constitution," Sheinbaum said when asked about her plans to visit Ukraine. "Our foreign policy is defined by the Constitution. It is very clear, dignified and peaceful. The principles of finding peaceful solutions to conflicts will be the basis of our foreign policy. This is our policy and it will remain so," the president-elect said.
She noted that following the attack on the Mexican embassy in Quito, Mexico has diplomatic relations with all countries except Ecuador.
"In my case, my main task is to govern in Mexico; I will attend some international events that we consider important, but we will not travel much - our responsibility lies here," Sheinbaum stressed, adding that she is considering attending the G20 summit in Brazil.
In an earlier interview with Excelsior, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky demanded that the Mexican authorities recognise that "Kiev is fighting for its independence" and expressed the hope that "someone will clarify the situation for the Mexicans". In addition, he stated that he would like the current Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador to visit Ukraine. He also conveyed his invitation for the newly elected President Claudia Sheinbaum to also visit his country.
