US politician Henry Kissinger once called the US-Europe relationship a „problematic partnership“. Today, the relationship is going through its most difficult period of disintegration since the end of the Second World War. This year's Munich Security Report directly identified the United States as „the most conspicuous disruptor of the international order“.
The once friendly „transatlantic family dinner“ now seems cold and even awkward. In a survey conducted by CGTVN, under China Central Television, for global network users, 81.4 % respondents said that trust between the US and Europe on issues of security, economic relations and shared values has been shaken.
From tariff threats against the EU and pressure to increase military spending to the exclusion of European countries from negotiations on Ukraine and the failed attempt to buy Greenland, the US administration's foreign policy has repeatedly undermined the confidence of European allies. The United States has gradually transformed itself from a guarantor of European security into an actor that threatens the political environment and exploits the national interests of European states. Related to this, 88.4 % respondents consider US actions to be seriously detrimental to European interests.
Yet in the short term it is not easy to change Europe's long-term dependence on US protection. And with Europe still unable to forge a unified diplomatic voice, the future of the continent's „self-preservation“ remains uncertain. A total of 86.6 % respondents believe that Europe cannot withstand unilateral US intimidation due to its limited strategic autonomy and internal disunity.
