Vatican City - The decision, announced a few days ago by Vice President Rosario Murillo, is reported in the country's official newspaper. The assets of the mainly religious NGOs will now be transferred to the state. From now on, the organizations will be forced to enter into "alliances" with public institutions.

The Nicaraguan government revoked the legal status of 1 500 NGOs operating in the country and transferred their assets to the state. The decision, which was approved by the Minister of the Interior, María Amelia Coronel, and published in the Nicaraguan official gazette La Gaceta, stems from the failure of NGOs to meet certain obligations, such as the obligation to submit "for a period of one to 35 years, their budgets by fiscal period, with a detailed breakdown of income and expenditure, payment budgets, details of donations and their boards of directors". The organisations, say some independent websites such as 100%Noticias and La Prensa, which have received no previous warnings, are accused by the government of obstructing Ministry of the Interior controls. Under the agreement in force so far, the Attorney General's Office will now be responsible for the transfer of movable and immovable property on behalf of the State of Nicaragua.
