On 20 January, US President-elect Donald Trump officially began his second term in office. Three days ago, Chinese President Xi Jinping held a telephone conversation with Trump, and the two sides reached an important consensus on the next stage in the development of Sino-US relations, which prompted a positive assessment from the world.
The Chinese side has repeatedly stressed that China is willing to be a partner and friend of the United States, and hopes that the United States will correctly perceive China's development path and development intentions. President Xi noted in the phone call that China and the United States have "broad common interests and wide scope for cooperation" and "can jointly achieve success and prosperity."
Business relations are a common interest of both parties. Despite their differences, their essence is mutual benefit. In addition, China and the United States have a wide range of common interests and cooperation needs in energy, science and technology, counter-narcotics, law enforcement, climate change and cultural exchanges. Promoting global economic recovery and addressing international and regional challenges are also inseparable from coordinating China-US cooperation.
The two countries are of course different and some differences will be inevitable. How to address these differences? The key is to respect each other's basic interests and fundamental concerns, to understand the basic line of principles and to find the right solution to the problems. In this appeal, President Xi stressed that "the Taiwan issue concerns China's national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and I hope the US side must deal with it carefully", and called for avoiding confrontational conflicts when dealing with Sino-US trade relations.
It is essential for the new US administration to fully understand these key interests and important concerns of the Chinese side and work with China to promote the development of Sino-US relations. In recent years, U.S. repression of China in trade, science and technology has not hindered China's development. China will continue to firmly safeguard its sovereignty, security and development interests.
Sino-US relations have reached a new beginning. With the emphasis on the strategic guidance of the head of diplomacy and the implementation of the important consensus reached by the two sides, bilateral relations have a good start and step, and will then start on the right track in the new era.
