"There is no winner in war and no loser in negotiation." This was the opinion of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who called for negotiations to end the war in Ukraine. "The 'negotiating table' will mean 'the end of war' and 'the beginning of peace', Wang Yi judged during a press conference on the sidelines of the annual session of the All-China People's Congress, China's parliament.
Beijing hopes to reach a "just, lasting and binding peace agreement" acceptable to all sides in the Ukrainian war, the Chinese foreign minister also said.
"China is willing to cooperate with the international community in accordance with the wishes of the parties concerned to reach a final solution to the crisis and lasting peace, and will continue to play a constructive role," Wang assured.
Relations with Russia
Referring to his country's relations with Russia, the Chinese foreign minister described them as "stable in a turbulent world".
"Sino-Russian relations are mature, lasting and stable and will not change because of a transitory event or because of interference by a third party. It is stable in a turbulent world," the Chinese foreign minister said at a press conference he held on the sidelines of the annual session of the All-China People's Congress, China's parliament.
US tariffs are unjustified
Regarding the tariffs imposed by the United States on the smuggling of fentanyl into the US market, the Chinese diplomatic chief condemned what he called "unjustified" US tariffs.
He stressed that Beijing will "react decisively" if the trade war escalates and warned against the "law of the jungle" in international relations.
"China, driven by a humanitarian spirit, has repeatedly offered its assistance to the US. It should not respond with ingratitude, let alone by imposing unjustified tariffs," Wang said at a press conference on the sidelines of the annual session of the All-China People's Congress, China's parliament.
"If cooperation is chosen, it can lead to mutual benefit, but if the pressure continues, China will respond harshly," added the Chinese Foreign Minister.
"There are somewhere around 190 countries in the world," he continued. "Imagine if each country decided to pursue its own priorities and believed in the power of (...) the world would slip into the law of the jungle," Wang further warned.
He also stressed that the fentanyl crisis can only be solved by "the US alone".
A full and lasting ceasefire in Gaza
China's diplomatic chief has called for a "permanent" ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, where a truce between Israel and the Palestinian Hamas movement has been in place since January 19 but where fears are growing that it will collapse.
"If the powers are genuinely interested in the people of Gaza, they should support a full and lasting ceasefire (...) and increase humanitarian aid," Wang Yi said during a press conference on the sidelines of the annual session of the All-China People's Congress, China's parliament.
The Chinese foreign minister also warned that any regime change in the Gaza Strip would lead to new instability in the Middle East itself, implicitly but explicitly alluding to US President Donald Trump's plan.
