Between 1 January and 30 September this year, the population of the Czech Republic decreased slightly by 3.3 thousand. The positive increase in population by foreign migration (15.0 thousand) was outweighed by the loss of population by natural change (-18.3 thousand). Compared to the first three quarters of 2023, there were significantly fewer live births this year (64.2 thousand), while the number of deaths (82.6 thousand) was essentially stagnant. The number of marriages (38.1 thousand) decreased by one tenth. Divorces (15.1 thousand) increased.
According to the balance sheet of the Czech Statistical Office, the Czech Republic had 10.897 million inhabitant. The decline from 10.901 million as at 1 January was the result of a negative natural currency balance supported by a one-off, but significant, decline in population due to foreign migration in March. "Every month from January to September this year saw a preponderance of deaths over live births. The population of the Czech Republic has thus consistently lost its inhabitants by this natural change. In the three quarters of the year, the total loss was a record 18.3 thousand inhabitants," Says Michaela Nemeckova from the Demographic Statistics Department of the Czech Statistical Office. The deepest population loss in natural currency since the establishment of the independent Czech Republic was three years ago, in 2021, when it amounted to minus 17.9 thousand people.
Population movements in Q1 - Q3 2023 and 2024
Balance of foreign Moving was positive in Q1-3 of this year at the level of 15.0 thousand, but it decreased significantly year-on-year (by 59.3 thousand). A total of 98.5 thousand people immigrated to the Czech Republic from abroad, down by 14.2 thousand year-on-year. On the contrary, the number of emigrants abroad was registered at 83.5 thousand, up by 45.2 thousand. However, more than half of the emigrants' residence expired in March, which corresponds to the expiry date of the temporary residence of those who did not apply for its extension.
During January to September born alive 64.2 thousand children, down by 5.9 thousand, or 8 %, year-on-year. The number of births to women in the age group 25-29 years decreased most significantly, both in absolute terms (by 2.6 thousand) and in relative terms (by 13 %). The number of births to women in the age groups 20-24, 30-34 and 35-39 years decreased by 6-9 %. There were 46.8 % children born out of wedlock, 0.4 p.p. fewer than in the same period of 2023. There were 82.6 thousand deaths in Q1-3 of this year, 0.3 thousand fewer than in the same period of 2023. While in the first two quarters the number of deaths fell year-on-year, the opposite was true in the third quarter. Most of the male deaths were in the 75-79 age group and the female deaths were in the 80-84 age group.
A total of 38.1 thousand couples entered into marriage. This was 4.4 thousand, or 10 %, less than in the same period of 2023. Most brides and grooms belonged to the generation born in 1993 and were aged 30 years. According to preliminary data, there were Divorce 15.1 thousand marriages, 0.7 thousand (5 %) more year-on-year. Two-thirds of married couples were divorced uncontested by joint petition. Divorces after 4 to 7 years of marriage were the most frequent.
