President Donald J. Trump adjusts tariffs on Canada and Mexico to minimize disruption to the auto industry

USING LEVERAGE TO PROTECT THE AMERICAN PEOPLE: President Donald J. Trump announced adjustments to tariffs imposed on imports from Canada and Mexico in light of the automotive industry's supply chain structure as it seeks to shift production to America.

• The duties imposed to address the flow of illegal drugs across our borders are now:
  • 25 % duties on goods that do not meet the rules of origin of the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).
  • Lower 10% duty on those energy products imported from Canada that do not fall under USMCA preferences.
  • Lower 10% duty on all potash imported from Canada and Mexico that does not fall under the USMCA preference.
  • No duties on those goods from Canada and Mexico that apply for and are eligible for USMCA preference.
• While the situation on our northern and southern borders continues to require appropriate action by the governments of Canada and Mexico, our American auto industry, which provides American jobs, should not suffer significant disruption simply because of the structure of its supply chain.

ENSURING BORDER AND ECONOMIC SECURITYA: President Trump will not allow our national security to be compromised by our closest trading partners, Canada and Mexico, but he recognizes the unique impact these tariffs could have on American automakers.

• President Trump will never stop advocating for the safety of the American people and is using tariffs as a tool to take decisive action that puts the safety of the American people and our national security first.
• On Tuesday, March 4, tariffs were issued on Canada and Mexico under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to curb the flow of illegal border crossings and drugs into our country.
• To minimize disruption to the U.S. auto industry and workers, it is appropriate to adjust tariffs on Canadian and Mexican products so that they do not bear an undue burden of Canada's and Mexico's inability to respond to the crisis at our borders.
• American manufacturers, including our automakers, have strengthened our economy and expanded our workforce.
• Today's measures promote a level playing field for American manufacturers and bring supply chains closer to home, especially for our auto industry, which has been hit hard by offshoring.

• During President Trump's first month in office, the number of illegal border crossings fell to its lowest level on record, down 96 % from an all-time high during the Biden and Harris administrations.
