President Donald J. Trump knows that the US can do better when it comes to education. Since 1979, the U.S. Department of Education has spent more than three trillion dollars, and virtually none of it has gone to waste. Although per-pupil spending has increased by more than 245 % over this period, there has been virtually no measurable improvement in student achievement:
- Thirteen-year-olds' math and reading scores are the lowest in decades.
- Six out of ten fourth graders and almost three-quarters of eighth graders do not perform well in mathematics.
- Seven out of ten fourth and eighth grade students are not performing well in reading, with 40 % fourth grade students not even reaching basic reading levels.
- The results of standardized tests have not changed for decades.
- US students rank 28th out of 37 OECD countries in math.
President Donald J. Trump and his administration believe we can and must do better.
Instead of maintaining the status quo that leads to the failure of American students, the Trump administration will put the bold education plan back where it belongs - in the individual states that are best positioned to administer effective programs and services that benefit their own unique populations and needs.
Instead of an overwhelming federal system that burdens schools with regulations and paperwork, the Trump administration believes states should have the power to expand educational freedom and opportunity for all families.
Why should we do the same thing over and over again and expect a different result?
RETURNING EDUCATION TO PARENTS AND COMMUNITIES: Trump signed an executive order returning power over education to families instead of the bureaucracy.
- The Executive Order directs the Secretary of Education to take all necessary steps to facilitate the closure of the Department of Education and the return of education authority to the states, while continuing to ensure the effective and uninterrupted delivery of the services, programs, and benefits Americans rely on.
- The order also mandates that programs or activities receiving the remaining Department of Education funds will not promote DEI or gender ideology.
