Chinese President Xi Jinping spoke by phone with US President-elect Donald Trump on Friday and called for more progress in China-US relations at a new baseline.
President Xi congratulated Trump on his election as President of the United States and said that both of them attach great importance to mutual interaction and hope that China-US relations will start well in the new President's term.
"China and the United States are two great countries pursuing their own dreams and striving for a better life for their people," Xi said, adding that the two countries share extensive common interests and a wide scope for cooperation.
"China and the US can be partners and friends, achieve mutual success and prosperity, which will benefit both countries and the world," Xi said.
"As two large countries with different national conditions, it is inevitable that there will be some differences between China and the US," Xi said, stressing that the key factor is mutual respect for the core interests and major concerns of both sides and finding appropriate ways to properly address these issues.
Xi mentioned that the Taiwan issue concerns China's national sovereignty and territorial integrity and expressed the hope that the US would approach it with great caution.
Regarding China-US economic and trade relations, Xi said their nature is mutually beneficial and beneficial to both sides, adding that confrontation and conflict should not be an option.
"The two sides should uphold the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation, strengthen cooperation and do more great, practical and good things for the two countries and the world," Xi said. "By doing so, China and the US will continue to move along the path of stable, healthy and sustainable development."
Trump thanked Xi for his congratulations and said he greatly appreciated the good relationship with him, expressing his desire to continue dialogue and communication. He also expressed his expectation that he would meet with President Xi soon.
"The US and China are the most important countries in the world and should maintain a long-standing friendship and work together to protect world peace," Trump said.
The two leaders exchanged views on major international and regional issues of common interest, such as the Ukraine crisis and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
They agreed to establish a strategic communication channel for regular contact on major issues of common interest to both countries.
