Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday morning visited the Guangdong-Macao Deep Cooperation Zone on Hengqin Island in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong.
Xi Jinping, who is also General Secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, cordially met with residents of the Macao Special Administrative Region who live and do business in the zone. He also spoke to people involved in planning, construction, administration and service provision in the area.
The president arrived in Macau on Wednesday to mark the 25th anniversary of Macau's return to Chinese administration and the inauguration of the region's sixth government.
During his inspection, Xi visited the exhibition hall, where the integrated development projects of Hengqin and Macao and the progress of Guangdong-Macao cooperation in recent years were presented through photos, charts and models.
Supporting the diversification of Macao's economy
President Xi Jinping stressed that since the establishment of the in-depth cooperation zone, significant progress has been made in various fields, and the level of integration between Hengqin and Macao has gradually increased. He said the promotion of appropriate economic diversification of Macao is becoming more and more obvious. "Practice has shown that the central government's decision to develop Hengqin and build this cooperation zone was absolutely correct," Xi said.
Supporting Traditional Chinese Medicine and Youth Innovation
Xi Jinping was introduced to the project of promoting Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) under the Guangdong-Macao Cooperation. He appreciated the approach of integrating advanced technologies from different disciplines, helping to take traditional Chinese medicine to a global level.
He listened to the experiences of young entrepreneurs from Macau in the Macau New Neighbourhood, the first comprehensive project aimed at improving the living conditions of Macau residents in Hengqin. "It is encouraging to see that young people from Macau have ideals, responsibility and the willingness to explore and innovate," Xi said, expressing his hope that more young people from Macau will find opportunities to fulfill their dreams in Hengqin.
Shared responsibility for the development of the zone
President Xi Jinping stressed that the original purpose of developing Hengqin was to promote the appropriate diversification of Macau's economy. The Guangdong provincial government, Zhuhai City and Macao should cooperate and jointly contribute to the development of the zone and share its benefits.
