The Czech automotive industry is the backbone of our economy - it accounts for over 9 % of GDP and employs more than 500 thousand people. But due to poor European regulation and growing competition, it faces serious threats.
Car companies are struggling to meet the mandated sales of electric cars and are facing billions of dollars in fines that will take away their funds for innovation and competitiveness. Volkswagen, for example, estimates these fines at almost CZK 40 billion this year. We have proposed abolishing the fines, but the introduction of a five-year average reference framework for 2025 to 2029 for a 15% reduction in emissions seems to be an acceptable compromise.
Together with Italy, Slovakia, Poland, Austria, Romania and Bulgaria, we are building and strengthening the Alliance for the Defence of Competitiveness. We are seeking the involvement of Germany, France and others.
We don't wait, we act. What are our basic requirements?
Europe must be economically strong, otherwise the world will stop taking it seriously.
Affordable cars and jobs - a wake-up call for EUROPE!
I firmly believe that development is not driven by regulation, but by competitiveness, technological innovation and consumer demand. And this is clearly at odds with current EU regulation. We need to create the conditions that allow technological innovation that will enable us to compete with, for example, Asia or America.
What we need to do
Concrete and clear steps instead of fussing, which we will push for at all levels and platforms. We are in intensive talks with other foreign partners to form an alliance for competitiveness and to prevent nonsensical regulations and ideas in the automotive and industrial sectors.
This is the only way to make Europe strong again and to compete with China and America.
