BUDAPEST - Prime Minister Viktor Orbán on Thursday received Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Qatar's prime minister and foreign minister, at the Carmelite monastery, with whom he discussed economic and energy cooperation and chances for a pro-peace policy, the prime minister's press chief Bertalan Havasi told the Hungarian news agency MTI.
In August 2023, during the visit of the Qatari Emir to Budapest, Hungary and Qatar elevated their relations to a strategic level. Qatar's National Development Strategy 2024-2030 opens up a wide range of investment opportunities in manufacturing, logistics, information technology, finance, healthcare and education, and Hungary is keen for Hungarian businesses to take advantage of these expanding business opportunities.
The two prime ministers also discussed the fact that Qatar is the second largest exporter of liquefied natural gas and the third largest exporter of natural gas in the world, so there are great opportunities for strengthening energy cooperation between the two countries in the future, Havasi said, adding that Orbán thanked his guest for Qatar's efforts to secure the release of Hungarian hostages captured by Hamas.
The Hungarian Prime Minister also praised Qatar's peace efforts in the context of regional conflicts and the war in Ukraine. We are proud to be part of the global peaceful majority together with Qatar, he said.
