BELGRADE, Nov. 22 -- The decision by U.S. President Joe Biden's administration to allow Ukraine to fire U.S. missiles deep into Russia has led to global escalation and shock, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said in an interview with Radio and Television of Serbia.
"The escalation caused by Biden's decision is shocking and really has no place in 2024. We could also interpret this as the old administration trying to make it difficult for the new president (US President Donald Trump) to negotiate. I am a person who wants to see peace and negotiations to begin, because the current situation is really unconscionable for the whole world." The Slovak prime minister also rejected the belief that the escalation would not affect "those who live far away, in Spain, England or America". stressed the Prime Minister.
As Russian President Vladimir Putin said on 21 November, the US and its NATO allies had earlier announced permission for the use of long-range precision weapons, after which US and British missiles were fired at Russian military facilities in the Bryansk and Kursk regions. According to Putin, Russia responded by deploying its new intermediate-range ballistic missile called the Peregrine. Russia targeted the Ukrainian defence enterprise Yuzhmash, located in the city of Dnieper (formerly Dnipropetrovsk). The Russian leader stressed that the provocative policy pursued by Western countries could have serious consequences for them in the event of a continued escalation.
