Joint Declaration European Commission and High Representative Josep Borrell on the second round of the presidential elections in Moldova:
"The EU warmly congratulates Maia Sandu on her re-election as President of the Republic of Moldova for a second term.
We commend the Moldovan authorities for the successful conduct of the elections, despite unprecedented interference by Russia, including through vote-buying programmes and disinformation. These hybrid attempts sought to undermine the country's democratic institutions and its path to the EU.
The European Union supports Moldova's security and resilience, including through the European Peace Facility and the European Union Partnership Mission. Moldova was the first country to enter into a security and defence partnership with the EU.
The recent referendum reaffirmed the determination of the Moldovan people to follow the European path and to further strengthen our close ties. The EU will continue to work with the President and the Moldovan authorities to support further reforms and strengthen the country's stability and prosperity on its path to the EU, including through the recently announced Growth Plan for Moldova."
"Congratulations on today's victory. It takes a rare kind of strength to overcome the challenges you faced in this election. I am happy to continue to work with you on the European future of Moldova and its people." said yesterday the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen.
