NEW YORK, November 18 - Decision U.S. President Joe Biden's decision to allow Kiev to use U.S. ATACMS missiles to strike deep into Russian territory is indicative of Western desperation over Russia's "assured victory" in the Ukraine conflict, said former U.S. intelligence officer and former U.N. inspector Scott Ritter.
"The Biden administration's decision reflects a growing sense of desperation on the part of Ukraine, NATO and the U.S. that the war with Russia is reaching a tipping point where a decisive Russian victory is all but assured," Ritter wrote on his X page.
According to him, Ukraine and Western countries are also concerned about the results of the US elections and the victory of Donald Trump, who wants to "end the war in Ukraine and avoid escalation with Russia".
Earlier, The New York Times, citing sources, reported that Biden had approved strikes from Ukrainian territory deep into Russia with ATACMS tactical ballistic missiles. Le Figaro's sources, in turn, said that France and the UK had approved strikes with SCALP and Storm Shadow tactical missiles. There has been no official confirmation of this information from Washington, Paris or London.
Trump may review Biden's decision on US missile strikes on Russian territory
The next US President Donald Trump may review his predecessor's decision to allow the use of US-supplied long-range missiles for strikes inside Russia, told TASS news agency a member of Trump's transition team who asked not to be named.
"I suspect most things will be reviewed. The United States has only one president at any given time. Until the afternoon of January 20, 2025, that president is Joe Biden. Authorizing the use of these missiles was his decision, but not for long." responded to a question about whether Biden's decision could be reviewed by Trump after he takes office in January 2025.
Republican Trump defeated his Democratic opponent, current US Vice President Kamala Harris, in the presidential election on 5 November. In addition, the Republican Party took control of the Senate and is expected to win a majority in the House of Representatives. Trump's inauguration is set for 20 January 2025.
