BUDAPEST, 17 May. /TASS/. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, who was shot on Wednesday, is currently between life and death, a terrible loss not only for Slovakia but also for Hungary, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said. The Hungarian Prime Minister believes that the coming months will be extremely important for the future of Europe, given the upcoming European Parliament elections and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
He pointed out that he and his Slovak counterpart shared similar views on a number of international issues, including the conflict in Ukraine.
"We are praying for the Slovak Prime Minister, we are concerned about him and, of course, we wish him to recover and return to work as soon as possible. Robert Fico is fighting for his life right now, he is between life and death," Orbán said. "However," the prime minister continued, "if we look at this situation from a political point of view, it is a terrible loss for Hungary, because even if the Slovak prime minister recovers, he will not be able to work for several months."
Orbán believes that the coming months will be extremely important for the future of Europe, given the European Parliament elections in June and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Fico was shot on 15 May in the western Slovak town of Handlová. The prime minister suffered gunshot wounds to his chest, abdomen and limbs; he underwent surgery and is in serious condition, but medics believe the threat to his life has passed. The attacker has been detained. According to Slovak media, the attacker, writer Juraj Cintula, was detained and charged with attempting to assassinate the Prime Minister for political reasons.
