Evan Gershkovich was sentenced to 16 years in a Russian prison despite having committed no crime. Rather, the Russian government targeted him because he is a journalist and an American. We are seeking Evan's release and will continue to do so.
As I have long said, and as the UN has concluded, there is no doubt that Russia is detaining Evan unlawfully. Journalism is not a crime. We will continue to vigorously defend press freedom in Russia and around the world, and we will stand up to anyone who seeks to attack the press or target journalists. Moreover, from day one of my administration, I have had no higher priority than to seek the release and safe return of Evan, Paul Whelan, and all Americans wrongfully detained and held hostage abroad. Evan endures his suffering with remarkable strength. We will not relent in our efforts to bring him home. Jill and I are praying for Evan and his family.
