Pyongyang, October 23 (KCNA) - Jo Chol Su, Director General of the Department of International Organizations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, issued the following press statement on Monday:
At the UN Security Council's open session on 18 October, a resolution was voted on authorising humanitarian access to the Gaza Strip in Palestine as its core.
The overwhelming majority of member states supported the resolution, but the US itself vetoed it on the sole ground that Israel's "right of self-defence" was not mentioned, and the resolution was thus rejected.
The US "disengagement" at a time when the international community is mourning the worst humanitarian disaster since World War II, in which more than 500 civilians were killed due to Israel's brutal bombing of a Gaza Strip hospital, is an affront. to the innocent souls of Palestine.
This clearly demonstrates that the US is indeed an accomplice to the massacre, a leader of human rights violations and an enemy of peace in the Middle East, as it arbitrarily violates international humanitarian law and international human rights law and encourages and supports crimes against humanity.
What deserves more serious attention is the US's blatant double standard against the "right to self-defence".
As everyone knows, the U.S. has challenged any legitimate exercise of the DPRK's right to self-defense to cope with large-scale war moves by hostile forces for aggression on the Korean Peninsula as a "threat to international peace and security" .
The US eagerly sponsors its "ally's" atrocities as a "right of self-defence", although the latter has no hesitation in committing massacres of civilians and bringing humanitarian catastrophe to the Middle East.
It is the height of extreme standards of double dealing and brazenness that it is unacceptable for anyone to condemn the exercise of the right of self-defense, which has not caused the slightest harm to the security of neighboring countries, as a "threat" but to justify Israel's "right of self-defense" act that has killed thousands of civilians and caused a humanitarian crisis.
It is none other than the US to distinguish between justice and injustice according to such rules that the perpetrator of the act is a pro- or anti-American state and to consider the UN as the only instrument to achieve its political purpose. This fact has shown once again that the US is the worst criminal state that destroys a just international order.
The US should explain the reason for its exercise of the veto to the 193 UN member states within days, in accordance with a UN General Assembly resolution adopted last April.
In fact, this system of explaining the reason for the veto was invented by the US in an attempt to corner the permanent member states that oppose its arrogant and arbitrary practices in the UNSC.
The U.S., which let out shouts of joy as it put its rivals on the "dock" and applied collective pressure, was caught in the trap it had set.
The international community should raise its voice in condemnation of the United States, which undermines regional and global peace and security and supports and encourages the massacre of civilians and humanitarian major disasters with arrogant and arbitrary practices and standards of double dealing.-0-
