PARIS, 29 August. French President Emmanuel Macron has declared the 2024 Summer Paralympic Games open.
The opening ceremony took place on Wednesday evening in the centre of the French capital Paris. Russian athletes did not attend.
Pavel Rozhkov, president of the Russian Paralympic Committee (RPC), told TASS on 27 August that Russian athletes would not attend the opening ceremony, although they were allowed to do so as spectators. According to Rozhkov, this decision was made because some athletes have competitions scheduled for the following day.
The RPC press service said on Wednesday that two Russian para-athletes had been denied visas to attend the Games. The RPC has asked the International Paralympic Committee and the Paralympic Games Organising Committee to ask the French government to review the decision. According to earlier reports, 88 Russian para-athletes were granted accreditation and visas to participate in the Paralympic Games.
The 2024 Summer Paralympic Games will be held in the French capital Paris from 28 August to 8 September. Russian Paralympians will participate in the 2024 Games under neutral status.
