"Life expectancy in China will reach 79 years in 2024, an increase of 0.4 years compared to 2023," said Lei Haichao, head of the National Health Commission.
"This achievement was ahead of schedule and exceeded the targets set in the 14th Five Year Plan (2021-2025)," he said during a press conference.
Achieving such results was not easy, Lei Haichao said, noting that in countries and regions where life expectancy exceeds 75 years, the annual increase is usually only about 0.1 to 0.2 years.
Data from 53 high- and middle-income countries show that China ranks fourth. Among G20 countries, life expectancy of 79 years ranks tenth, Lei Haichao said.
This suggests that the Chinese nation's excellent traditional culture, healthy lifestyle, the implementation of a series of strategies such as the Healthy China Initiative, and the prioritization of health development have had a direct impact on improving public health, Lei Haichao concluded.
