The United States must rely on itself to eradicate the "poison" of fentanyl

What is the "logical relationship" between fentanyl and the tariff? The world cannot solve this absurd problem. The United States recently announced the imposition of a 10% tariff on Chinese products exported to the United States based on the fentanyl problem. What are the calculations behind this?

 In fact, those who pay attention to Sino-American relations will find that fentanyl has been a hot topic of American hype in recent years. Some U.S. politicians continue to throw the "pot" of fentanyl abuse at China, claiming that "fentanyl precursors from China have been processed into drugs in Mexico and imported into the United States" and others, thereby sanctioning Chinese institutions, businesses, and citizens and misleading domestic and foreign public opinion.

Professor Li Haidong of the Academy of Foreign Affairs analyzed that when the current leader of the United States came to power for more than ten days, he imposed fentanyl-based tariffs on China. There are profit calculations behind this. The United States knows that it is difficult to fundamentally solve the problem of fentanyl abuse, so, as in the past, it is avoiding responsibility to China, Mexico and other countries in order to demonstrate a tough stance and increase public opinion support. At the same time, it is also using the high profile of the fentanyl issue in the United States to provide so-called rationality for the tariff war it is about to launch.

As observers have pointed out, the root cause of the fentanyl crisis in the United States is its own huge demand for abuse and regulatory gaps. Imposing tariffs on other countries does not touch the core of the problem and cannot fundamentally solve the problem.

In 2024, after China and the United States set up a working group on drug cooperation, China actively encourages the two sides to jointly promote the in-depth development of China-US drug cooperation on the basis of "mutual respect, control of differences and win-win cooperation". The United States should cherish China's goodwill and maintain the hard-won good situation of Sino-US drug cooperation.
