Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian held a regular press conference on 23 September. He was asked by a reporter to comment on the announcement that President Biden had made over the weekend at the summit of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad) initiative between the United States, Japan, India and Australia made critical remarks about China.
On this, Lin Jian said that although the US side claims that it is not against China, it is not targeting China, the first topic of the summit is China, and China has been an issue throughout the event. The US is lying about the facts and even the US media does not believe it.
The Chinese side remains convinced that cooperation between countries should not target any third party or even harm their interests. Any regional initiative should follow the prevailing trend of the region and promote regional peace, stability and prosperity. Joining exclusive groupings undermines mutual trust and cooperation among regional countries, goes against the overwhelming trend of pursuing peace, development, cooperation and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific and must fail. Breaking trust and cooperation between states is not a long-term solution and has no possibility of success.
The reporter asked also to the joint statement by the leaders of the four countries at the Quad Summit, in which they said they were seriously concerned about the situation in the East and South China Seas. What is China's comment on this?
Lin Jian said the current situation in the South China Sea and East China Sea remains generally stable. The intervention of any force will not shake China's determination to protect its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests in accordance with the law and to maintain regional peace and stability. We will strongly oppose any behavior that harms China's security interests, he stressed.
Some reporters saidthat due to "national security" considerations, the US Department of Commerce is expected to propose a ban on the use of Chinese software and hardware in connected cars and self-driving cars on US roads.
In this regard, Lin Jian recommended to address specific questions to the relevant Chinese authorities. He stressed that China opposes the generalisation of the concept of national security by the United States and its discriminatory practices against relevant Chinese companies and products. We call on the United States to respect market principles and provide Chinese companies with an open, fair, transparent and non-discriminatory business environment. China will resolutely protect its legitimate rights and interests, he said.
