Today, the UN General Assembly elected the Czech Republic for the period 2025-2027 by a majority of 166 votes. The Czech membership of the Council expired in 2023. The renewed membership is a confirmation of the priority position of human rights in Czech foreign policy, which is in line with the Government's Programme Statement of January 2022. The membership, which will begin on 1 January 2025, will be the fifth in a row.
"This is great news that underlines how crucial human rights are for Czech foreign policy. Today's election of the Czech Republic to the UN Human Rights Council is also a gift to President Václav Havel on his 88th birthday," said the Foreign Minister after his successful candidacy Jan Lipavsky.
The main priorities of the Czech membership will be to submit further resolutions on freedom of assembly and association and equal participation. The Czech Republic will continue to support civil society, NGOs, human rights defenders and journalists. Priority attention will be given to the human rights situation in Russia and Belarus.
