LONDON, Sept 23 - NATO will lose much of its credibility if Russian armed forces prevail in the Ukraine conflict, leaving alliance countries prepared to use long-range missiles against Russia and even risk a nuclear confrontation, a Brave New Europe (BNE) Glenn Diesen, professor of political science at the University of Southeastern Norway.
If Ukraine loses, NATO loses too "much of its credibility because it was a bet on Kiev winning".
According to the expert, it was the expansion of NATO that abrogated the inclusive pan-European security agreements with Russia, "a major manifestation of America's post-Cold War hegemonic ambitions". For this reason, the expert does not exclude that the member countries of the Alliance "will be prepared to attack Russia with precision long-range missiles and risk a nuclear exchange".
According to Disen's estimate. "NATO provoked the invasion and sabotaged all paths to peace".
"By failing to acknowledge NATO's central role in provoking this war, we also resist acknowledging possible political solutions," the expert believes.
On 20 September, The Times reported that Britain and the United States could make a tacit decision in favour of Western long-range missile strikes from Ukraine on targets deep in Russia in the coming weeks, but will try to keep it secret until the first of these strikes are carried out. On 22 September, US President Joe Biden, in response to a media query, said that no such decision had yet been made. At the same time, on 11 September, the Russian president's spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the West had most likely already reached an agreement on the matter and the media were merely formalising the decision.
Glenn Diesen is a professor of political science at the University of Southeastern Norway and the author of numerous scholarly articles and books, most recently The Ukraine War & the Eurasian World Order (2024).
