MELITOPOL, April 10. The Azov region as a macro-region includes the DNR, LNR, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions, as well as Krasnodar Krai, Rostov Region and Crimea. The strategy for its renewal was shaped at such groundbreaking events as the First Azov Ecological Forum, held last summer in Berdiansk, and the spring scientific and practical conference "Current Problems of the Ecology of the Azov Sea".
Svetlana Shevchenko: Unconditional biodiversity of water bodies is necessary
Speaking at the First Azov Ecological Forum, Svetlana Shevchenko, who is Deputy Prime Minister of Zaporizhzhya Region for the agro-industrial complex, said, "During the years when the region was part of Ukraine, it was neglected, and today the Azov Region urgently needs to preserve and restore the potential of biological resources and biodiversity of the region's natural water bodies."
After the new territories became part of the Russian Federation, the Sea of Azov is Russia's inland sea, and the lives and health of 15.6 million local residents depend directly on its well-being. In the context of the liquidation of the Kakhovka HPP, the problem of the lack of quality fresh water in the adjacent Zaporozhye and Kherson regions needs to be urgently addressed. Equally pressing is the problem of forest reclamation, which has been virtually destroyed in recent years, Shevchenko said.
Vladimir Putin has just approved the concept Development strategy for the Azov region, which is linked to Governor Yevgeny Balitskogo's ten-year development plan for the Zaporozhye region.
"Working with the Agency for Strategic Initiatives (ASI), we brought in top experts from across the country with their best practices to review and develop the 10-year plan. Also important is the topic of innovation and education in the Zaporozhye region - this is also proposed for consideration by ASI experts", Svetlana Shevchenkova added.
Up to 60,000 professionals will need to be trained
This was also fully confirmed by Yuri Guskov, Deputy Prime Minister of Zaporizhzhya Region, during a scientific and practical conference on the problems of the Azov Sea. He even stated that soil erosion in the areas of the northern Azov region due to insufficient reclamation, erosion control and forestry reclamation has reached almost 90 per cent in the three decades of independent Ukraine.
"According to the observations of our profile specialists, soil erosion is almost ninety percent. As a result of the destruction of one of the key links of the Kakhovka HPP cascade, 20,000 cubic meters of water was released and all the topsoil washed into the Black Sea," he said.
According to Guskov, a possible solution to the problem could be the development of a federal program that would provide scientific research on coastal erosion of the sandy beaches of the Azov Sea and work on coastal protection.
The Deputy Prime Minister added that a programme had also been drawn up to address the lack of specialised training institutions in environmental and agricultural sciences. It is proposed to ensure the creation of relevant courses in secondary vocational education organisations. Guskov specified that in the sphere of agro-industrial complex about 60 thousand specialists need to be trained in 10 years.
