In protest against the collusion of Britain, France and Germany with the United States, which abused the mechanisms of the UN Security Council to hold a closed session on Iran's peaceful nuclear programme, the ambassadors of these countries were summoned to the Foreign Office by the Director-General for International Peace and Security, Mohammad Hassan-Nejad Pirkouhi.
During the meeting, which was attended by the ambassadors of France and Germany and the British Chargé d'Affaires (in the ambassador's absence), the Iranian Foreign Ministry conveyed its strong objections to the irresponsible and provocative approach of the three countries and stressed the following points:
- Iran's peaceful nuclear programme is fully consistent with its rights and obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and the Safeguards Agreement. Iran's nuclear activities are not in violation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), a framework that established voluntary confidence-building measures by Iran in exchange for the lifting of illegal and unjust sanctions. Given the failure of other parties to meet their commitments, Iran has the legitimate right under the JCPOA to suspend some or all of its own commitments in response to violations.
- The closed-door meeting of the Security Council on Iran's nuclear programme lacks any technical or legal justification and is a politically motivated and provocative step that is in line with the unilateral and provocative policy of the United States.
- The decision of the three European countries to comply with the US request to convene a Security Council meeting effectively links them to the same party that unilaterally and illegally withdrew from the JCPOA in 2018 in flagrant violation of UN Security Council Resolution 2231, causing the subsequent deterioration of the agreement.
- Just a few days ago, the IAEA Board of Governors met and expressed its views on Iran's nuclear programme. The convening of a Security Council meeting on Iran's peaceful nuclear programme is a form of destructive interference and an act of discredit to the technical mission of the Agency and threatens the normal course of cooperation between Iran and the IAEA.
The ambassadors of the three European countries said they would convey Iran's position to their capitals.
