The Taiwan issue is a purely internal matter of China and does not tolerate any external interference, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said on Wednesday.
He was reacting to comments made by the US, EU, Japan and other countries on the People's Liberation Army (PLA) military exercises around the island of Taiwan. According to Guo, this is a distortion of the facts and interference in China's internal affairs. "China strongly rejects this," he said.
Guo identified separatist activities seeking Taiwan's independence and their foreign backers as the real source of instability in the Taiwan Strait. If some countries really want peace, they should respect the one-China principle, their political commitments to China and clearly oppose Taiwan's independence.
He said China's joint military exercises are a punishment for the Lai Ching-teo government's provocations, a warning to separatists and a step to protect national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
"As long as provocations toward Taiwan's independence continue, our countermeasures will continue," Guo said. "We will never allow anyone to separate Taiwan from China in any way."
