PARIS - A view of the Paris skyline with Notre Dame Cathedral reopening on December 7 after five and a half years of reconstruction following a severe fire that destroyed its roof and tower and caused extensive damage to the entire structure.
Notre Dame Cathedral fire in Paris on April 15, 2019
On 15 April 2019, during Holy Week, the cathedral was hit by a massive fire, causing the loss (collapse) of the tower, clock and original 12th century roof. The skeleton of the building was saved. The French architect Jean-Michel Willmotte said that the cost of rebuilding the burnt-out Notre Dame de Paris would be approximately one billion euros.
In March 2022, during the reconstruction of the building, several tombs and a 14th-century lead sarcophagus were discovered at the junction of the nave and transept. Archaeologists also discovered several fragments of statues under the floor of the cathedral, which probably belong to part of the 13th-century barrier that separated the altar from the nave.
