UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Friday wished all those celebrating the Chinese Lunar New Year, or Chinese Spring Festival, via video message.
Guterres began his message with the words "Chunjie Kuaile", which means "Happy Spring Festival" in Chinese.
"I am pleased to send my warmest wishes to all those celebrating the Lunar New Year and this Year of the Snake," said the UN Secretary-General. "The snake symbolizes wisdom, resilience and renewal. In these difficult times, may these qualities guide us as we renew our commitment to peace, equality and justice."
Guterres also expressed gratitude to China and the Chinese people for their support of the United Nations.
"I would like to thank China and the Chinese people for your firm support for the United Nations, multilateralism and global cooperation. Let us welcome new beginnings with hope and determination to create a better future for all," he said.
"May the Year of the Snake bring good health, happiness, prosperity and new beginnings," the Secretary-General added.
The Chinese Lunar New Year falls on January 29 this year.
