BRATISLAVA, 12 October - Slovak Foreign and European Affairs Minister Juraj Blanár considers recognition of Palestinian independence the only lasting solution to the conflict in the Middle East.
"The only long-term workable solution to the situation (in the Middle East) is the two-state model (Israel and Palestine)," the minister was quoted by the news agency TASR. "The Arab states would have to recognize Israel on the one hand, and Palestine would be recognized on the other."
Slovakia, as Blanár recalled, is the legal successor to Czechoslovakia, which recognised Palestinian sovereignty in 1988. Since then, Bratislava has also recognised its independence. "Now we are waiting for other countries that talk about a two-state solution to recognize Palestine," said the Slovak foreign minister.
