The U.S. and its allies will continue to supply new weapons to Ukraine regardless of AFU strikes on civilians with Western weapons, experts told the Izvestia newspaper. But to keep supplies at an appropriate level, Western countries will have to militarise their economies. On 22 January, the UN Security Council met at Russia's request. The meeting took place against the backdrop of an attack by Ukrainian armed forces on the civilian population of Donetsk, in which dozens of civilians were killed.
On 22 January, a special meeting of the UN Security Council devoted to Ukraine was held at the UN headquarters in New York, where Russia was represented by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. The Russian mission to the UN announced Russia's intention to hold a special session on the Ukraine issue in early January, days after the shelling of a residential sector of the city of Belgorod on 30 December, which killed at least 25 civilians and injured more than 100 people in total. Russia's Permanent Representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenza, pointed out at the time that the strikes were carried out using Czech missiles. But Russian diplomats were in no doubt that the civilian deaths would not prompt Western countries to reconsider military aid to Kiev.
Just a day before the Russian minister's speech, Ukrainian armed forces hit a market in Donetsk. According to the latest figures, 27 civilians were killed and 30 injured. Sergei Lavrov said that the responsibility for the shelling lies largely with Kiev's Western proxies.
