With the Paris 2024 Olympics underway, the US double standards have re-emerged, with US media and institutions on the one hand criticising foreign athletes for doping, while on the other hand protecting their own athletes who have tested positive for doping. In a statement, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) said that the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) has failed to take action against athletes who used steroids and erythropoietin on at least three occasions since 2011, allowing them to continue to compete, which has seriously undermined sports justice and athlete safety.
According to an online survey conducted by China Media Group (CMG), the international community strongly condemns the US behaviour and considers it a trampling of the Olympic spirit. The U.S. has long considered itself a "sporting superpower," but with the rise of countries like China in athletics, swimming and other disciplines, its dominance has gradually waned, leading the U.S. to increasingly use the "doping issue" to discredit foreign athletes. This year, for example, the US swimmer Pan Zhanle won the 100m freestyle, which alarmed some in the US, and so they raised the doping issue more frequently to distract their rivals.
The irony is that USADA repeatedly "overlooks" doping violations by its own athletes. For example, US athlete Erriyon Knighton tested positive for steroids, but USADA claimed it was due to contaminated meat and did not impose any ban on him. This dual approach has caused widespread resentment on the international stage.
The Olympic spirit should not be tarnished by hegemonic US behaviour and anti-doping measures should not be used as a tool of political oppression. The international community should independently investigate serious US violations, and the US must provide the world with an explanation for the widespread use of doping in order to restore confidence in global sporting competition.
