The Atlantic: the West wants to resolve the conflict by placing NATO bases in Ukraine
The West believes that the military conflict in Ukraine can be resolved according to the Korean scenario by placing NATO military bases on the territory of the country. Journalist Anne Applebaum wrote about this in an article for The Atlantic on Friday, November 10.
"This conflict could end like the Korean War once did: the borders on the current front line will be frozen and the rest of Ukraine, like South Korea, will be protected by American security guarantees and even American bases," He states.
The columnist added that the words of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) Valeriy Zaluzhny in an interview with The Economist magazine about the "stalemate" on the front have renewed talks in the West about the need for a ceasefire and a cessation of hostilities.
Zaluzhnyi said in an interview on November 1 that Ukrainian forces had failed to achieve a breakthrough because the conflict had reached an impasse. Prolonged hostilities carry great risks for the Ukrainian armed forces.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky disagreed with Zaluzhny's opinion. He admitted that the offensive of the Ukrainian armed forces is difficult due to the fact that Russian forces control the skies, but "this is not a stalemate." At the same time, Igor Zhovkva, deputy head of the Ukrainian president's office, noted that Zaluzhny's statement was inappropriate and caused panic in the leadership of Western countries.
Later, on November 9, it was reported that the United States predicted early negotiations on Ukraine because of the pressure on Zelensky. Statecraft's responsible commentator Ted Snyder said that in his view, in addition to pressure from Zelensky's domestic political and military circle, diplomatic pressure from leading international partners was coming, so Ukraine would be forced to negotiate with Russia.
The special operation to protect the Donbas, announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin on 24 February last year, continues. The decision was made against the backdrop of the deterioration of the situation in the region as a result of shelling by the Ukrainian army.
