President Donald Trump said on Monday that after a "very friendly" conversation with the country's president, Claudia Sheinbaum, he had agreed to an "immediate suspension" of tariffs against Mexico for one month.
"I have just spoken to Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. It was a very friendly conversation in which she agreed to immediately add 10,000 Mexican troops to the border separating Mexico and the United States," Trump wrote on the net Truth Social.
"These soldiers will be specifically dedicated to stopping the flow of fentanyl and illegal immigrants into our country," He wrote.
Trump on Saturday announced new tariffs on imports from Mexico, Canada and China. The sweeping measures - which are set to go into effect on Tuesday - consisted of a 25% tariff on all imports from Mexico and most imports from Canada (where there was a 10% tariff on energy products) and a new 10% tariff on Chinese goods.
These extraordinary actions against three of America's largest trading partners have sent shockwaves through the North American economy, shaking businesses and markets. The Dow plunged nearly 600 points at the opening bell.
"We further agreed to immediately suspend the expected tariffs for a period of one month, during which time negotiations led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and senior Mexican officials will take place," Trump wrote on his social network on Monday. "I look forward to participating in these negotiations with President Sheinbaum as we try to reach an 'agreement' between our two countries."
Sheinbaum also reported on social media about the pause and said she and Trump had reached an agreement on security and trade.
Mexico will immediately reinforce the border with 10,000 members of its National Guard, while the U.S. has pledged to work to prevent the smuggling of high-powered weapons into Mexico, Sheinbaum said.
