WASHINGTON, January 26. New U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed Saturday that he has suspended Washington's aid to foreign countries.
"On the very first day, I instructed all members of my cabinet to march with all the forces at their disposal to beat inflation and bring down the cost of daily living. We want to bring down prices. I've imposed a federal hiring freeze, a freeze on federal regulations, a freeze on foreign aid," said during a rally in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Among other measures aimed at fighting inflation, Trump has also included the creation of a new US agency, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), to make the US government more efficient.
Earlier, Politico reported that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio had suspended most existing foreign aid grants for 90 days. According to the newspaper, the document leaves "room for interpretation and provides some exceptions." Military funding programmes for Israel and Egypt will continue, but aid to Ukraine, Jordan and Taiwan is likely to be suspended.
Any decision to continue, modify, or discontinue foreign assistance funding programs will be made after review by the Secretary of State. Reuters later reported that the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has suspended projects related to providing assistance to Ukraine.
