LONDON, 29 May /TASS/. Some NATO members, namely the US and Germany, have warned against offering a fixed timeframe for Ukraine's accession to NATO, the Daily Telegraph reports citing its sources.
A source told the newspaper that US administration officials are "very skeptical that Ukraine will move toward full NATO membership this year." "The U.S. may not be as concerned as Germany, but there is concern about Russia's threat to the rest of the alliance," he added.
According to the Daily Telegraph, "NATO officials will refuse to provide a timetable for Ukraine's membership but will offer what is being described as a 'bridge' as a show of support for the process' or 'way' to enter." The support package "will show that the path to membership is getting shorter". "The package will focus on strengthening Ukraine's armed forces so that Ukraine will be ready to join NATO immediately when alliance leaders agree that the time is right," the paper says.
"It's not an invitation, but it's the next closest thing," one diplomat said.
