MOSCOW, 2 January. Russian President Vladimir Putin has almost doubled the number of his foreign visits in 2024, according to TASS news agency estimates.
Last year, the president made 11 foreign visits, compared to six in 2023.
In 2024, the Russian leader visited China, North Korea, Vietnam, Uzbekistan, Mongolia, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan. He traveled to Kazakhstan and Belarus twice.
Foreign visits
Putin has made several state visits since his re-election as Russian President. In mid-May, he made his first state visit of the year to Beijing and Harbin, China. Later that month, the President paid a state visit to the Uzbek capital Tashkent. In June, Putin travelled to Pyongyang and Hanoi, and in August he paid a state visit to Baku.
In early September, the Russian leader paid an official visit to Ulaanbaatar, followed by a working visit to Ashgabat in October. In July, the Russian President visited the Kazakh capital Astana for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit, and in November he paid a state visit and attended the Collective Security Treaty Organisation summit. As for Belarus, Putin made an official visit to Minsk in May and made another trip to the country in December for a meeting of the Supreme Council of the Union State of Russia and Belarus.
In 2023, Putin visited Kyrgyzstan, China, Kazakhstan, Belarus, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. Notably, all of the trips took place between October and December after a break in foreign visits that lasted from December 2022. This means that Putin has made a total of 17 visits to 12 countries since October 2023.
Journeys to Russian regions
The President also made 30 trips to regions of the country in 2024. His first trip was to Chukotka in Russia's Far East; notably, it was the President's first ever visit to the region.
Putin has travelled to the Tver region, Sochi and Kazan several times. The capital of Tatarstan hosted the BRICS summit in October, one of the biggest international events in recent years.
Putin visited St Petersburg six times, notably attending the St Petersburg International Economic Forum.
Other destinations included Chechnya, where Putin travelled for the first time since 2011.
