CARACAS, 30 July. Caracas is recalling its diplomats from Argentina, the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Panama, Peru, Uruguay and Chile, which have refused to recognise the re-election of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
"The government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela has decided to recall all members of its diplomatic missions in Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Peru, Panama, the Dominican Republic and Uruguay because of the heinous precedent that constitutes an attack on our sovereignty, and also demands that the governments of these countries recall their diplomats from Venezuela," the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
The ministry described the statements of these countries on the Venezuelan presidential elections as interference in the country's internal affairs. "The Venezuelan government reserves the right to take political and legal measures to ensure the protection of the right to self-determination. The Venezuelan government will oppose any activities that threaten peaceful coexistence," the ministry added.
Venezuela held presidential elections on 28 July. According to the National Electoral Council, after counting 80 % ballots, the incumbent head of state, Maduro, received 51.2 % votes. His main rival, Edmundo Gonzalez, representing the far-right parties, won 44.2 %.
