The United States commends the actions of the States Parties to the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) in electing the Czech Republic and North Macedonia to seats on the Executive Board of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and rejecting Russia for one seat.
As many countries noted during the negotiations, a State Party that wages aggressive war against a neighbouring State and commits widespread violations of the Convention does not deserve a seat on the OPCW Executive Council. It is clear that States Parties value the global norm against the use of chemical weapons. Russia must stop using chemical weapons and riot control agents as a method of warfare in its illegal war against Ukraine and in violation of the CWC. Now that the vote is over, we hope that all States Parties will come together and focus on the core mission of the OPCW so that we can continue to work towards the goal of a world free of chemical weapons.
