LONDON, 26 March /TASS/. The High Court in London will allow WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange to appeal again against the decision to extradite him to the US. The review of the latest appeal against extradition began on February 20, 2024. It also gave the US government three weeks to provide guarantees that the journalist's rights will not be trampled upon in court and that he will not face the death penalty.
Here is what is known about the situation at this time.
Founder of WikiLeaks
In 2006, Assange founded the website WikiLeaks, which specialises in publishing confidential information obtained from anonymous sources. To protect the identity of whistleblowers and editors, Assange set up his server in Sweden, as Swedish law protects the anonymity of users.
The website has published thousands of classified documents, including information that the US National Security Agency (NSA) tapped the phones of officials in a number of countries.
In 2010, the US began investigating Assange for allegedly violating the Espionage Act, which carries the death penalty.
