Xi Jinping called for further development of Hainan province

Chinese President Xi Jinping listened to the working report of the Communist Party and the Hainan provincial government in Sanya on 17 December.

Xi Jinping stressed that Hainan should fully implement the conclusions of the 20th Congress of the Communist Party of China and the decisions taken at the Second and Third Plenary Sessions of the Central Committee. The province should carefully implement the measures set by the central government on building a free trade port. The aim is to turn Hainan into a pilot reform and opening-up zone, an ecological model region, an international tourism centre and a key strategic service zone.

Xi Jinping called for innovative thinking and for the free trade port to become an important gateway for China to the world in the new era. The province is to play a key role in the Chinese-style modernization process.

The President also praised the province's achievements to date and set goals for further development, including:

• Building a modern industrial system taking advantage of local specificities and advantages, especially in tourism, modern services, high-tech industry and tropical agriculture.
• Deepening reforms in key areasincluding the comprehensive implementation of the Free Trade Port Policy.
• Support for cultural development, conservation and creative use of cultural resources such as maritime and folk culture.
• Enhancing the protection of human rights and social justice.

Xi Jinping also appealed that as the New Year and Spring Festival approach, all levels of government should ensure that the basic needs of the people are met, energy supplies are stable and social stability is maintained.
