Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday stressed the need to maintain the strategic resolve and unity of the Chinese people in overcoming obstacles on the road to building a strong and prosperous country.
At a New Year's gathering hosted by China's top political advisory body, Xi said China's modernisation would not be without obstacles:
"On the path of Chinese modernisation, we are not only facing clear skies and gentle breezes, but also strong winds, rough waters and even dangerous storms. We must maintain our strategic resolve, unite the strength of all Chinese people and break through the waves with courage," the president said.
The year 2024 has brought many challenges for China both domestically and internationally. Yet the country has responded calmly and taken a wide range of measures to meet major economic and social development goals, Xi noted.
The President also stressed that the year 2025, which will conclude the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025), will be crucial for achieving the planned goals. China will focus on proactive macroeconomic policies, promoting economic recovery, improving people's living standards and maintaining social stability.
Xi stressed the importance of achieving the objectives of the 14th Five-Year Plan in a high-quality manner as a basis for a successful start of the 15th Five-Year Plan.
He also praised the contribution of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and urged it to continue to play a key role as a specialised advisory body.
The meeting was also attended by other leaders of the Chinese Communist Party and the state, including Wang Huning, Li Qiang, Zhao Leji, Cai Qi, Ding Xuexiang, Li Xi and Han Zheng.
