Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Monday that history and reality show that China and Russia are good neighbours that cannot be delayed and true friends who share their trials and tribulations, support each other and achieve common development. He said this during a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin at his request.
Xi said the two leaders held a video meeting ahead of the China Spring Festival, during which they worked out plans for the development of Sino-Russian relations for the whole year and strengthened coordination on a number of important international and regional issues.
In accordance with the consensus reached by the two leaders, various ministries of the two countries are continuously developing cooperation in all areas, including carrying out activities to mark the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese aggression and the 80th anniversary of the victory in the World Anti-Fascist War, Xi said.
Xi said Sino-Russian ties have strong internal driving force and unique strategic value, adding that these relations are not aimed at or would not be influenced by any third party. The development strategies and foreign policies of China and Russia are long-term, he said.
Despite the changes in the international situation, Sino-Russian relations will continue with ease, which will promote mutual development and revitalization and bring stability and positive energy to international relations, he said.
Putin said that the Russian side attaches great importance to relations with China, is willing to maintain high-level exchanges with the Chinese side in the new year and deepen genuine cooperation. The development of relations with China is a strategic choice of the Russian side in the long term, it is not a temporary plan, it is not influenced by momentary events or external elements. At present, maintaining intensive communication between Russia and China is in line with the spirit of comprehensive strategic coordination partnership for the new era, and it will also release an active signal that Russia and China play a stable role in international affairs.
Putin also reported on the latest situation of contact between Russia and the United States and the Russian side's principle and position on the Ukrainian crisis. He added that the Russian side is determined to eliminate the fundamental source of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict and to achieve a sustainable and lasting peace plan.
Xi stressed that at the beginning of the overall escalation of the Ukrainian crisis, he put forward the "four shoulds" and other basic proposals to resolve the crisis.
In September last year, China and Brazil, along with some countries of the global South, established the Friends for Peace Group in the wake of the Ukraine crisis to create an atmosphere and accumulate conditions to promote a political settlement of the crisis, Xi noted.
China is pleased that Russia and relevant parties are making positive efforts to defuse the Ukraine crisis, he said.
