China's President Xi Jinping said on Tuesday that the relationship between China and France has unique strategic significance and global influence because the two countries are independent, advanced and responsible powers. He made the remarks during a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron on the sidelines of the 19th G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro.
Xi said the two sides should deepen strategic communication, strengthen mutual support and maintain the positive development of Sino-French relations. He expressed the hope that bilateral relations can contribute to the development of China-EU relations and to peace and stability in the world.
China is willing to continue high level exchanges with France and deepen cooperation in areas such as culture, education and people-to-people relations.
On the Ukraine crisis, Xi reiterated that China hopes the conflict will be defused. China does not wish to see the conflict escalate or negatively impact surrounding regions. China will continue to play a constructive role in seeking a ceasefire and an end to the conflict.
Macron, in turn, said France is willing to work with China to implement the consensus reached by the two presidents, agreeing to deepen high-level exchanges and promote people-to-people and cultural exchanges while preserving traditional friendship.
The French President also expressed his desire to deepen cooperation with China in the areas of climate change, artificial intelligence, global governance and other areas.
